New Zealand Llama Association Lama Database

Dear Member, (Llama Owner)                                           1st October 2004

As discussed at the AGM and in the autumn magazine, we have been building a database to record information about the NZ llama population.

What?
The attached form allows you to record all the info about each llama.

Why?
The first objective is to provide an information resource for all owners.
The creation of a registry is the next objective, with the ability to provide certificates for llamas, showing key genealogy information.
Although Alpaca is an available option it is not our objective to provide a database of or registry for alpaca’s – but this info will be needed to accurately complete the picture on the NZ llama population bloodlines.

Why?
Please support this initiative – collectively we will benefit from this resource, and so will our llamas!
The key to this will be a critical mass of info – to put together as many as possible of the pieces of the jigsaw.
We will never have a better opportunity to capture this information, as valuable background is lost with each llama that dies and each detail that is forgotten.

How?
Fill in a form for each llama. If this form seems onerous and you have the info in another format eg ILR or ALR certs – let us know- we are happy to receive info in any form that is legible. We can also email an electronic version for those of you who would prefer to type than write.

Some of the information will be unknown and that is OK, please do endeavour to complete as many of the details as possible. Where you are unsure of a detail, a best guess is fine as long as you add a ? to show that it is not an absolute. It would also help if you could fill a form in for any deceased animals you had in your care.

Where definitions have been required e.g. breeder name, we have conformed with the standard of the world’s largest llama registry, the ILR. With this approach we maintain all the options of having reciprocal rights with international registries, should that be desired in the future.

When?
There is a deadline to collecting this info - beyond which a formal structure will mean that listing or registering your llama will have costs associated with it (your volunteers will have resigned!). Make the most of the free opportunity! This deadline has been set at 1st January 2005.  Please return completed forms to Penny King 136 Horseman Rd Waitakere Auckland.

Help!
Should you have any questions, or if you are willing to help with this project – please email or call a member of your committee – that's what we're there for!

Regards Penny King
Vice President NZLA & Database Coordinator

Update

From 2004/2005 AGM

The motion to upload the NZ registry into a sub-group of the International Llama Registry was passed unanimously. Now the NZLA will be able to upload the developing database for around $600NZ, making it free to members & others for a limited time only.
